The World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants 2024 have been announced, with an impressive 11 Australian steakhouses making the cut. Neil Perry’s Double Bay banger Margaret in Sydney was awarded third place overall, and was the highest new entry of the year.
Perry’s former hotspot, Rockpool Bar & Grill in Sydney (now owned by Hunter St Hospitality), took out eighth spot, while the glamorous Melbourne outpost of butchery Victor Churchill came in at number 11.
Sydney’s steak scene is on fire, with specialists The Gidley landing at 24, and its sister restaurant Bistecca at 45. South American diner Porteno was at 71, and steakhouse chain Kingsleys Woolloomooloo at 89.
Melbourne’s Steer Dining Room cracked number 17, French fantasy Entrecote was at 86, fancy brasserie Gimlet at 94, and heavy hitter Grill Americano at 98.
The World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants ranking is now in its fifth year, with 850 steak restaurants visited by 14 “steak ambassadors” on five continents. Judging criteria includes meat quality, meat selection, service, wine lists, reservation process and the look and feel of the venue.
The number one slot was again taken out by the Parilla Don Julio in Buenos Aires’s Palermo district. The fabled Argentinean steakhouse is known for its 60,000-bottle wine cellar and specialty cuts of regeneratively farmed Aberdeen Angus and Hereford cattle.
Closer to home, Margaret’s woodfired grill offering includes a 220-gram hunk of Coppertree Farms Friesian fillet with red curry butter and grilled shallots ($59), and a 300g David Blackmore Wagyu sirloin with chimichurri ($220). Victor Churchill offers specialty cuts including 220-gram Stone Axe Wagyu zabuton ($95) and a one-kilogram Rangers Valley black market bistecca ($265).
