Zac Barrett and his father Neil can’t get enough of the coffee business. First came Mo Espresso, then Max + Sons, with the same heart but a different body.

It’s very much a family affair. Grandfather Max is Neil’s dad, and architect daughter Carly Barrett is the one to thank for the fresh Danish milk bar fit-out.

This time around there’s less moustaches and a more expansive menu, with blueberry bagels compliments of Holy Bagel Co and pastries and cakes from The Little Bakery. Top Dup and ChiCho Gelato go into the cafe’s beautiful gelato-doughnut burgers (yes, that’s gelato sandwiched between two doughy halves). The more health-conscious will appreciate the chocolate and chia almond truffles from Raw by Chris.

Like Mo Espresso, Max + Sons seeks out the best coffee roasters, such as Mecca, Proud Mary and Loaded. It also strives to educate, offering occasional tastings of various beans from the same farm processed using different methods.

Throw in artwork from Jerkfvce and floral arrangements by The Wildflower Perth, and you have one of the city’s nicest spots to enjoy a coffee.
