The Freycinet Marine Farm is a bustling seafood shack brimming with fresh mussels, oysters, sea urchin, abalone and fish. It’s a popular tourist stop along the drive to Wineglass Bay and a must for those who enjoy seafood.

Park out the front and wander up to the counter. Depending on the time of day, the lines may be a few people deep. But the exceptionally fresh produce is worth the wait. Oysters that had been in the ocean earlier in the day are shucked to order at dizzying speeds by the farm’s dedicated team.

Mussels cooked in a rustic tomato and chilli broth make for a good road-trip lunch. Servings of abalone and sea urchin offer a taste of the ocean that’s distinctive and unusual. But the highlight is the Pacific oysters. Grown in the pure waters of Greater Swanport river, Pelican Bay and Great Oyster Bay, they come straight from the leases and onto your plate, ready for a little squeeze of lemon.

Take a seat at one of the dozen or so brigh-blue picnic tables and wait for your order. Grab a few beers, or a bottle of local riesling and soak up the Freycinet sun.
