A beautiful greenhouse-like shed (the former site of a cafe that burnt down in 2016) is now home to Misc, an all-day diner celebrating Mediterranean flavours and communal dining.
“Entertaining, breaking bread amongst loved ones is a cultural tradition very close to my heart,” owner Jad Nehmetallah tells Broadsheet. “We’re here to help people create memories they’ll never forget.”
Set within the charming, heritage-listed Parramatta Park, the diner has a large indoor dining room with glass walls and a lofty pitched roof, an outdoor dining space surrounded by trees and lush greenery, and a terrace space for events. Coffee is made and drinks poured from behind a curved counter, with shelves of wine and spirits sitting beneath illuminated arches. The view outside does most of the talking, with the Nic Graham-designed room simply furnished with blond-wood tables and bentwood chairs.

SIGN UPMisc executive chef Sebastian Geray (The Star) and Joel Bennetts (Fish Shop, Peppe’s) are behind the menu.
For breakfast, you can build your own plate from options including focaccia with rosemary oil; smoked labneh with salsa; tomato carpaccio; pea, zucchini and kefalograviera (a Greek sheep’s milk cheese) fritters; cured meats such as mortadella and salami; and cheeses like burrata and stracciatella. More substantial breakfasts include Misc’s take on the spanakopita, with brik pastry encasing silverbeet, soft-boiled egg and leeks; a sujuk and egg roll with cheddar; and hotcakes with berries and ricotta.
The lunch menu is similarly organised. Pick and choose between hummus, saganaki, oysters, anchovies, sardines and taramasalata. Or, for a medium hunger, dive into kingfish crudo or calamari with fermented chilli. Heavier options include rigatoni with mussels and tomato sugo; a roasted half chicken with toum; and the spectacular deli sandwich stacked with mortadella, salami, pastirma and chilli mayo.
To drink, there’s a make-your-own Margarita tray, which comes with options including chilli, grapefruit mist and spiced macadamias and citrus. There’s also a good selection of natural wines, and several alcohol-free cocktail options.
The diner also stocks supplies for picnics in the park, including Olsson’s salt, tins of Ortiz anchovies, and a range of hot sauces and olive oils.
