Drive-through coffee’s had a bad rap. But Coffee Heads is the one to change that. The roadside kiosk specialises in polished sandwiches, pastries and specialty coffee (it takes its cues from Melbourne hot spots like Hector’s Deli and Saul’s Sandwiches). It’s run by three hospo legends and locals: chef Brendan Pratt (formerly Vasse Felix), and James Tischhauser and Isaac Kara (both behind Margaret River Roasting Company).

The trio is doing its darndest to convince motorists to pull over and take five. The knockout roast chicken roll is a fermented potato bun, filled with house-made gravy and chook marinated in garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice and smoked paprika. There’s also the four-cheese toastie, a roasted eggplant roll, salted macadamia cookies and glazed doughnuts. The team sells from local producers, from Rise & Co bread to Jibbas Hot Sauce.

Kara knows his way around a roaster. He’s made a custom coffee blend with smooth and buttery notes designed to work equally well hot and cold. It’s also available in bags of beans to go. There are cans of cold brew and Bobby’s Soda, alongside the crowd-favourite miso-caramel milkshake.

The shop has drive-through lanes heading in both directions and a waiting area out the front. The kiosk gets busy during peak times, especially on holidays and weekends, so it’s safer to order online to secure your sanga and skip the queue.
