Coastal areas and cafes are a natural match. Swimmers, surfers and fishers are always up early, looking for coffee before or after heading out. The Mornington Peninsula, with its still front beaches and white-water back beaches, is packed with great cafes and even a couple of coffee roasters. Here’s where to find coffee, brunch and more.

  • Hidden in the industrial part of Mornington, the spacious Commonfolk HQ roasts and brews what’s arguably the best coffee on the peninsula. It also runs an excellent breakfast menu featuring all your faves.

  • Finding good coffee in an unexpected place is always a rewarding experience. Case in point: Little Rebel Roastery, set in an industrial estate in Dromana. Come for the signature Black Sheep espresso blend, stick around for an oversized toastie in the rustic warehouse digs.

  • Courtesy of the team at Commonfolk nearby, this light and airy spin-off delivers a refined all-day menu teeming with Mornington Peninsula produce. It's located directly opposite the beach, and the seaside setting makes it an idyllic spot to relax with a coffee and a pastry or muffin made on site.

  • One of Melbourne’s most prolific cafe operators is behind this corner spot, serving brunch cocktails, churro waffles with ice-cream, healthy breakfast bowls, braised brisket eggs Benny and some of the best people-watching in the area.

  • This quirky cafe is littered with retro knick-knacks and ornaments, and suits the style of the 1930s building. Set along the esplanade opposite Fishermans Beach, the discreet location allows you to lounge in the sun and avoid the bustle of nearby Main Street.

  • This well-stocked cafe is a local favourite. Grab a pastry or a pie to take away, or settle in for a coffee and a toastie. On your way out, be sure to take a look at the thoughtful range of products from some of the peninsula’s favourite makers.

  • A vast, multi-use cafe with a menu that ranges from triple-stack buttermilk pancakes to banh mi. Warm up with one of Mercetta's signature hot chocolates, complete with Persian fairy floss. Or wake up with a Bloody Mary, gussied-up with candied bacon. Family- and pooch-friendly.

  • Remember the milk bar from your childhood? This isn’t quite it – but you’ll be pleased to know it’s serving brunches with roaming international influences, colourful smoothies and well-made coffee. Directly opposite the beach, footwear optional.

  • The menu at this rustic cafe and kitchen is totally plant-based, with an abundance of vegan- and vegetarian-friendly options. It’s got you covered with superfood salads, raw sweets, cold-pressed juices and brews by local favourite, Prodigal Coffee Roasters.

  • A sleek, lovingly restored cafe replete with art deco charm and modern swagger. Stop in for remixed brunch classics, Inglewood coffee and a breezy, beachside vibe.

  • Could this former milk bar be the best general store on the peninsula? It's serving tricked up versions of takeaway classics, and has a neat retail section stocked with local produce, readymade meals and natural wine. A contender for sure.
