Black Bar & Grill has one of the prime spots within The Star, with picturesque harbour views and plenty of foot traffic. But dining here is not just about location. Black is a modern steak house with plenty of flair.

There’s a sense of theatre from the get-go. You’ll enter alongside a moodily lit bar with an impressive display of wines and spirits (whisky, rum and tequila particularly), before passing a huge slab table made from blackbutt, a type of eucalyptus. Then, you’ll be seated by the enormous front windows that pivot open to receive the harbour breeze.

The open kitchen is all part of the show, with the wood-fired grills erupting regularly as they char up premium beef. There are ten or more Angus and Wagyu steaks to choose from, including a 450-day, grain-fed, 8-plus marble score Wagyu rump cap.

There’s a touch of the USA in the wide range of cold seafood, including oysters, king fish, prawns and caviar. The menu is rounded out with pastas, whole fish, salads and rich, veggie-based sides.

Don’t forget to take a walk along the windows to the cold-rooms and kitchen on the way out. And take note, there’s been more than a few celebrity sightings here. So really, Black is dinner and a show, no matter how you look at it.
