“What good new restaurants should I try?”

Broadsheet’s editors field this question, or a variation on it, almost every day. While we’d just as soon recommend one of Wellington's straight-up best restaurants or a long-standing institution, the pull of a hot new place is hard to deny.

So here it is: our edit of the best new restaurants in Wellington from the past 12 months, updated monthly. Some of these places are redefining the way we eat and will go on to become classics. Others will be shorter lived. Either way, these are the spots we’re enjoying eating and drinking at right now.

  • The Wellington venue is the Koji’s team’s second opening on the same street – and the two-storey bar and restaurant explores Mediterranean, North African and Middle Eastern flavours, with herbaceous cocktails to pair them with.

  • This sleek Wellington venue is from the Fred’s Sandwiches team and channels the welcoming atmosphere of a pub in a contemporary, warm-toned space. Go for a chicken parmigiana or Sunday roast and stay for DJ sets on weekend nights.

  • With minigolf, a carnival, and 14 eateries and bars, Willis Lane is an ambitious development in Wellington’s CBD. And it’s entirely underground.

  • With diner-inspired accents, a spacious all-weather courtyard and much more seating, the popular Chinese and Taiwanese eatery moved from Taranaki Street to Eva Street’s Hannahs Laneway in July 2023.

  • The intimate bar and restaurant has taken up residence in the Newtown spot previously occupied by Mason and is helmed by a couple with experience at some of Wellington’s most well-known venues – including The Bresolin, Ortega Fish Shack and Mighty Mighty. Head to the 26-seater for a warm welcome, wine and some rustic, seasonal European-inspired sharing plates.

  • From the team behind popular Wellington eateries Mr Go’s and Ombra, Kisa serves sophisticated yet approachable Turkish and Middle Eastern-inspired food.

  • This celebration of Syrian food started life at Wellington's markets and then became a pop-up. Now, owner-operators Hasan Alwarhani and Flora Quintana are serving their popular Middle Eastern sharing menu in a light-toned, 60-seat space on Tory Street.

  • It's South Asian and Indian street food, tapas-style, at Vaibhav Vishen's Willis Street restaurant, where you'll find big-flavour dishes with plenty of texture.
